Designed in the style of English gardens, it extends over four hectares of promenade and relaxation. Pathways follow the park’s lovely green curves, alternating between lawns, water features and clusters of remarkable trees. Rock waterfalls, fountains and statues emerge from groves and flowerbeds.

In addition to this landscaped palette, the arboretum boasts a flamboyant rose garden of over 600 feet, a theater de verdure where summer shows take place, an adorable 1900 kiosk and a children’s garden. During the summer, guided tours are offered to discover the arboretum’s living collection. The Parc Mauresque is of great botanical interest, with over 25 rare and exotic species listed: ginkgo biloba, palms, liquidambars, magnolias, olive trees, maritime pines, fruit trees…

By the way, why the name “Parc Mauresque”?

The Parc Mauresque takes its name from the Arabo-Andalusian-inspired casino that once sat in the park. This jewel of “Belle Époque” Orientalism was imagined in 1863 by architect Paul Régnauld, whose design was inspired by the Alhambra in Granada. A mecca for the bourgeoisie at the beginning of the 20th century, the Casino Mauresque attracted an international clientele who vacationed or took luxury spas in Arcachon. Unfortunately, on the night of January 17-18 1977, a fire reduced the historic monument to ashes. At the top of the elevator, a scale model shows the Casino Mauresque as it was in its heyday, while further on, a pinasse marks the building’s location.

How do I get to Parc Mauresque?

It couldn’t be easier! A small, rather original elevator links the Summer City to the Winter City and takes you directly to the heart of the park. Since 1948, it has replaced the old funicular, of which only a pulley remains. Right next to it, a small overhang offers an unparalleled panoramic view of the Bay of Arcachon and the rooftops of the Ville d’Été. Time to get out the camera!

Viewpoint over the Ville d’Hiver

A stone’s throw from the Parc Mauresque, you’ll discover the Saint-Paul footbridge and theSainte-Cécile observatory, designed by Gustave Eiffel. Twenty-five meters high and a spiral staircase. It’s a bit of a climb, and you don’t need to be afraid of heights, but the panoramic view over the city and the basin is well worth the climb.

Have you discovered all the secrets of the Parc Mauresque? Discover the 300 villas of the Ville d’Hiver. Some are more extravagant than others, but each has its own originality, history and fascinating anecdotes. In season, the Tourist Office organizes guided tours.

Practical info

The park is open in winter from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and in summer from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Admission is free, as is access to the elevator on Place du 8 mai.

Dogs allowed on leash.

Nestled in the hills above the Ville d’Hiver, Arcachon’s historic district , the Parc Mauresque is one of Arcachon’s favorite strolling spots.
