The port of Biganos, a postcard setting

Dozens of colorful cabins line this intimate harbor in the middle of the forest. The place has long been a source of inspiration for artists, painters and photographers, who never tire of its distinctive, escapist charm. It’s also a popular spot for yachtsmen, who find it a peaceful haven to drop anchor upstream from the Leyre Delta, in the shade of the great oaks. According to historians, this is the ancient port of Boïos, an ancient Gallo-Roman city dating back over 2000 years. A timeless place steeped in history, sure to delight campers in search of the picturesque!

Port des Tuiles, discreet and wild

Port des Tuiles is the closest to the basin, but also the smallest. Under the protection of the Conservatoire du Littoral et des Rivages, it has preserved its wild and authentic character, with typical huts surrounded by reeds, baccharis and tamarisk in bloom. In the past, it was used to store the tiles produced in Biganos, hence its name. The tiles were limed (coated with lime and sand) before being transported to the oyster beds of the Bassin. Oyster farmers used them to collect oyster spat. This technique is still used today. It was also from Port des Tuiles that herds of cows forded the Leyre River to reach the salt meadows of Malprat Island, nestling at the bottom of the Arcachon Basin.

Walks, bike rides and boat trips

By bike, a lovely stroll through the forest on the banks of the Eyre from Biganos to Mios links up with the cycle paths of the Arcachon basin. You can also easily access the Vélodyssée between Arcachon and the Pointe du Cap Ferret. If you prefer hiking, you’ll love walking through the pine forests of the Landes de Gascogne or on the Camino de Santiago de Compostela along the Delta de l’Eyre.

From April to October, it’s great fun to discover the meandering Delta de la Leyre by galupe (traditional flat-bottomed boat), known as the “little Amazon” for its wild, unspoilt character. From the Port of Biganos, in the company of a boatman, you’ll explore the little-known areas of the Basin, the old oyster ports, the island of Malprat, the bird sanctuary of Le Teich and the Domaine de Certes in Audenge, a veritable paradise for migratory birds… Escape is guaranteed!

Unusual visits in Biganos ?

What if you took advantage of your camping vacation near Biganos to change your habits a little? You could, for example, visit theEsturgeonnière du moulin de la Cassadotte to learn the secrets of making Gironde caviar, a tradition that owes its origins to the first Russian emigrants who arrived in the region at the beginning of the 20th century. How original is that? Another unusual activity is a visit to the Smurfit Kappa paper mill, the only factory in the Arcachon basin!

Specializing in the manufacture of kraft paper from wood (Landes pine), the company opens its doors to visitors in July and August. It’s an opportunity to discover a craft that has been part of the landscape and local life for over 90 years. If you’d like more ideas, don’t hesitate to ask the campsite reception for advice!
