Culture and heritage

Just 20 km from our campsite on the Bassin d’Arcachon, Lanton boasts a discreet and appreciable heritage that deserves to be admired up close.

The church of Notre-Dame de Lanton is a perfect example. Built in the 12th century on the Voie littorale (or Voie des Anglais) of the route to Santiago de Compostela, it is one of the oldest churches in the Bay of Arcachon. Inside, the church houses a number of treasures worth a look: a 17th-century gilded Virgin Mary, a finely chiselled marble high altar and a magnificent stained-glass window depicting Saint Roch as a pilgrim.

If religious buildings inspire you, the Saint-Louis de Taussat chapel, decorated with stained glass by Raymond Mirande, is also worth a visit.

A stopover at the old port of Taussat-Les-Bains will plunge you into the heart of the traditions and customs of the Bassin d’Arcachon. The Gardarem eco-museum brings back to life the trades of yesteryear, in particular gemmaking and oyster farming.

A stone’s throw away, the pretty seaside villas remind us that Lanton was one of the very first seaside resorts on the Bassin d’Arcachon in the early 19th century.

Small ports and pretty beaches

Your camping holiday near Lanton will also be an opportunity to discover a whole series of small ports and pretty beaches at Cassy, Taussat-les-bains and Fontainevieille.

In Lanton, the swimming pool is a delight for families. This former hunting reservoir dating from the late 19th century forms a small, shallow reservoir of seawater, which is supervised in summer.

A stroll around the Taussat marina brings you to the charming beach of Taussat-les-Bains and its magnificent Belle Époque villas, where celebrities such as Toulouse-Lautrec once spent their holidays on the Bassin d’Arcachon.

To the right of the Cassy oyster port is a large, beautiful beach where families can also enjoy sea bathing, as well as nearby bars, restaurants and shops. If you prefer a quieter, wilder beach, the campsite recommends Plage de Suzette, a little sandy spot tucked away in a hollow that few tourists know about (unsupervised beach).

The campsite’s favorite? A sea kayak trip from Port de Cassy to discover the Lanton conch or take a tour of Malprat Island.
