Sainte-Cécile Observatory in Arcachon

Just 25 minutes from our 4-star Le Ker Helen campsite, in the heart of Arcachon’s Ville d’Hiver, theObservatoire Sainte Cécile is a windmill-like 25-meter metal tower built by Paul Régnauld and Gustave Eiffel in the 19th century. This belvedere offers a panoramic view of the town and the Arcachon basin. The “wow” effect is guaranteed!

Arcachon’s little “Eiffel Tower

Built in 1863, the Sainte-Cécile Observatory is the work of architect and urban planner Paul Régnauld to whom we owe the subdivision plan for the Ville d’Hiver. He was assisted in his task by Gustave Eiffel, who had not yet built his famous tower (it would take another 25 years!) The observatory’s design was based on innovative architectural choices for the time: metal girders (railroad rails) surround a cylindrical staircase suspended from the platform by steel cables. Thanks to advances in metallurgy, the duo created a construction that was both light and resistant. Originally, the tower supported a full tall-ship mast, complete with jib and yards, which were removed when the site was renovated in 1990.

A unique vantage point that must be earned!

To reach the observatory, climb up to the “Ville d’Hiver”, pass through the Parc Mauresque and then cross the Saint-Paul footbridge, which links the Sainte-Cécile and Saint-Paul dunes over a 32-metre stretch, 15 metres above a deep ravine.

At first glance, the tower doesn’t inspire much confidence, as its appearance could cast doubt on its solidity. As a result, many visitors think twice before undertaking the climb. But rest assured, there have been no incidents since the installation was commissioned! And don’t forget that Gustave Eiffel himself was involved in the project. So there’s nothing to worry about!

Although the climb is straightforward, the spiral staircase is rather narrow and steep. As a result, it’s not always easy with young children, or for those prone to vertigo… The further you climb up the steps and progress towards the platform, the more the staircase starts to pitch. While some may find it amusing (especially teenagers), others may find it a bit of a sweat.

But once you’ve reached the top of the tower, you’re rewarded with a 360-degree view with a breathtaking panorama of Arcachonthe roofs of the villas of the Ville d’Hiver and the entire basin! On a clear day, you can even see the crest of the Dune du Pilat.
